Monthly Minutes of the Circus City Cyclists

Date:  Thursday, July 13, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Miles Straly.

Attendance:  Zak See, Miles Straly, Bob Blong

Secretary’s report: (John Miller - absent):  Sent by e-mail to members.  Approved as published.

Treasurer’s report (Zak):  Current balance is $5,663.48. Most expenses and income for the month are from the 2006 Metric Century as related below.  Report approved as presented.

Metric Century (Miles):   Due to the heavy all-day rain for our 2006 Metric Century on June 10, we did not have the number of riders, nor experience the large financial gain that we have in the past.  We had approximately 60 pre-registered riders, but normally we would have an additional 80-100 “day-of” registrations.  Our gross profit for the ride was $557.26.  If we would have had good weather and the anticipated number of riders the profit would have been in the neighborhood of $2200-2500.  The club unanimously voted to give the EMAs $100 for their volunteer help the day of the ride and to pay $60 to the Indiana Bicycle Coalition as part of our agreement with them making the CCC Metric Century an IBC featured ride.  This left a net profit of $397.26.  An additional unanimous vote was to give one half of our net profit ($200) to Relay for Life in accordance with our agreement with them.

Miles announced that he would not be the Coordinator for next year’s Metric Century and suggested that if no one steps forward to assume the Coordinator position by the September club meeting that the club not sponsor the 2007 Metric Century.  Miles suggested offering the ride to another local club that might like to take it on as a fund raising event.  Clubs or organizations that might be interested include Rotary, Relay for Life, and the Nickel Plate Trail.  Zak said he would consider possibly coordinating the event next year.  It was decided that a decision will be made on this topic at the September club meeting.  (NOTE:  If you have an opinion on this important issue please attend the Sept meeting.  Also, if you are interested in being the 2007 Metric Century Coordinator please contact Miles or Zak prior to that meeting.

Many of the 2006 Metric Century t-shirts are still available for purchase at the Breakaway Bike Shop.  The price of these beautiful shirts has been reduced to $3.75 each (well below cost).  Please stop by the bike shop to pick up yours.

Nickel Plate Trail (Miles):  The grand opening for the first paved section of the Nickel Plate Trail was last Saturday, July 8.  It was well-attended.  Trail usage remains heavy.  Miles said the Trail still needs funds to continue the process of completing the trail through the county.  Funds are needed to purchase the right-of-way from Indiana Trails Fund and to complete the 20 percent match required for the TEA grant for the next phase.  Miles moved, Bob seconded, and it was unanimously approved to give $2,000 to the Nickel Plate Trail for a designated project that will offer recognition to the Circus City Cyclists.  Mike Kuepper, President of Nickel Plate Trail, Inc. will be contacted to determine what project our funds will go toward.  The next meeting of the Friends of the Nickel Plate Trail will be at the Mandurian Buffet Restaurant, Peru, Weds, Jul 26 at 7:00 p.m.  All members and the general public are encouraged to attend.

 Miscellaneous:

Funds of up to $20 were approved to allow Zak to get the appropriate folders/boxes to properly set up his Treasurer’s books.

Wally, Miles, and possibly other members will compete in the Bass Lake Bicycle Race on July 30.

The club trip to the Little Miami Trail in Ohio in early July was cancelled.  Miles and

Rich are contemplating a club PAIN (Pedal Across Indiana) ride in August or September.  Any member interested in participating should contact Miles or Rich.

A triathlon will be held at Mississinewa Reservoir in September.  For details, contact Zak.

It is anticipated that a large number of club members will complete the Hilly Hundred in October.  Registration is now open for this ride.

There being no further business the meeting concluded at 8:15 p.m.

The next meeting will take place on Thursday, September 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, Peru.

Submitted,

Miles Straly, acting Secretary
