Monthly Minutes of the Circus City Cyclists

 

Date:  Thursday, May 10, 2007

President Miles Straly called the meeting to order at 7:42 p.m.

Attendance:   Pres. Miles Straly, VP Sharon Johnston, Secy. John Miller , Rich Holler and Michael Miller.

Communication:  John read a thank you from the Mayor’s Wellness Council thanking the club for supporting the April Community Bike Ride.

Secretary’s Report:  Minutes were highlighted by John.

Treasurer’s Report:  No report.

Monon Trail Ride:  The ride is this Saturday, May 12. Meet at Miami ’s Fort at 7:00 AM for a trip to Indy in place of our regular Saturday club ride.  The plan is to park at 146th Street by the new mall.  We hope to be on the trail by 8:30 for a ride of approximately 30-35 miles to include the Monon Trail.  We will eat lunch in Indy and take in a little shopping.  Leaving Indy by 2:30 PM we should be back no later than 4:00 PM .  If you are interested, please contact Miles.

Ride your bike to work month:  May is national bicycling month as well as fitness month.  The club has a promotion during “ride your bike to work week” of May 14-18th.  Forms are available at Breakaway Bike Shop to record your miles ridden Monday thru Friday that must be turned in to Breakaway before May 20.  Prizes will be awarded for most total miles ridden during the week, most total miles to work and most days ridden.

Miami County Trail:  There was a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce, CCC and the Historical Society/Museum April 24th.  Miles, John, Wally and Jeff Bingham represented the club. The goal is to produce a flyer for the Miami County Trail.  The trail will be a cloverleaf with four separate loops:

Southeast- Wally; Southwest- Jeff; Northeast- Miles; Northwest-John. 

If you have input regarding historic points of interest or picturesque areas, please contact the person responsible for that particular loop.  Next meeting is planned for June 19 at 3:00 PM at the museum. 

“Go fast” ride:  No action to report at this time.

Kokomo Time Trial:  Just a reminder that the Breakaway Bicycle Club in Kokomo has a time trial.  The time trial schedule is available from Zac at Breakaway shop in Peru .  

Nickel Plate Trail:  Tomorrow May 11 there will be concrete poured at the bridge at 800N.  Volunteers are needed if interested contact Bill Click.  There are two more bridges in the north county to do at a schedule to be determined.  Paving on the trail from Bunker Hill south to Miami and possibly further will begin in June, ‘07.  The $3,500 grant is from Square D.  The crossing of the Wabash River as part of the big TEA grant is planned for spring, ’08.  Unpaved sections of the trail that can be ridden with fat tire bikes include 500S to Bunker Hill and 300N to Lovers’ Lane.

Mountain Bike Nickel Plate Ride:  Tentative date, Sunday June 17 at 1:00 PM to take the place of our regular club ride.  We would meet at Bunker Hill to ride north on the trail and do a loop to Lovers’ Lane out to Seven Pillars and back of approximately 25 miles.

Fat Tire Trail Ride:  Tentative date of Sunday, June 24 to take in either Salamonie Reservoir Trails, Huntington Reservoir Trails ( Roush Lake ) or back to the Boys’ Club at Winona Lake .  Breakaway Bike has maps of the Salamonie trail.

Kids Bike Rodeo:  Happened last Saturday, May 5.  At least 225 helmets were given out to area youth.  The club supports the helmet giveaway but needs to participate better in helmet fitting and bike repair next year.

Club Jerseys :  Orders have been placed for individuals and there will be some extra merchandise available at Breakaway.  Due in sometime in June I think.

Upcoming Events:  2nd Annual Tippecanoe & Bicycles Too ride, May 12 Sponsored by Winamac Kiwanis Club and Pulaski County Family Y.  Ride starts at the Winamac Town Park Gazebo at 8:00 AM .  Call 574-946-4150 for directions.  Routes of 12, 25 and 63 miles.  Breakaway Bike to provide mechanical support.  

The Great Race:  Pro level bicycle races and criteriums held in Goshen and Elkhart over Memorial Day weekend.

First Ever CCC Poker Run, June 9  In place of our Metric Century, we will have a non-supported ride of our 62 mile route.  Meet at Peru High School at 8:00 AM to pick your map and first card.  Stops to be confirmed to pick up cards are the convenience store at Grissom base, Bunker Hill store, Somerset store and back to the school for the last card.  Riders should be off the course by 3:00 PM .  This is a free, non-supported ride and riders will be responsible for their own nourishment and bike repairs.  The best three poker hands will be awarded gift certificates from Breakaway Bike Shop in Peru in the amount of $50.00, $30.00 and $20.00.  We will possibly meet for dinner afterwards.  Contact Rich or Sharon for more info.   

Mini-triathlon:  The Mayor’s Wellness Council is planning a mini-triathlon on June 16th to include the swim at Miller’s Pool and run and bicycle from Maconaquah Park .  If you have questions re the Mayor’s Wellness Council events, check the website www.cityofperu.org or contact Shannon See at Breakaway or e-mail her at sstoner@hotmail.com

N.I.T.E. (Navigate Indy This Evening) Ride June 30: Sponsored by CIBA, my wife’s favorite ride starts at 11:00 PM at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indy.  Track races, merchandise tent, fireworks, live music, the circle at night and decent food make this an annual favorite.  

Dues Renewal:  Thank you to our members that have renewed.  There is a membership form at circuscitycyclists.org and also at Breakaway Bike Shop.  Miles will be sending out a letter so if you haven’t renewed yet, please do so.

Next meeting: Second Thursday at 7:30 PM (June 14) at First Christian Church.
